Ownership Competence and the Future of Finland

Independent Finland is celebrating its centenary this year. Boardman and its comepetence partners Nordea, PwC, Roschier and Varma also want to give its contribution to this remarkable anniversary year of Finland by organising a Conference on Ownership Competence and the Future of Finland.
This conference has been approved as a part of the Finland 100 years -program led by the Prime Minister’s Office.
Prosperous Finland needs successful businesses, for which competent owners, board members and leaders are needed now and in the future!
- ”What are the key questions for owners, boards and management in the rapidly changing business environment?”
- ”How are the roles of the owners and requirements for ownership competences changing in leading successful businesses in the future?
These are some of the questions discussed at the Conference in June 15th, 2017 in Helsinki, Finlandia Hall followed by a bufee and networking. This conference is to enhance the ownership competence and to impact the general atmosphere related to ownership. It brings together owners, members of boards, business leaders and top management of listed, family-owned and growth companies to discuss the importance of ownership and ownership competences in the future.

Ms TARU LINDEMAN, Managing Director, Boardman Ltd M.Sc.(Econ.) Taru Lindeman has worked as the Managing Director for Boardman Oy since 2011. She has managed board work development programs and trainings as well as Board of Directors evaluations for Boardman Oy since 2005. She has worked as a board member in privately owned companies, associations and foundations. Previously she worked more than 10 years as a supply chain and management consultant at UnitedLog and its predecessors Establish and ELC Finland Oy. |

Mr RISTO MURTO, Managing Director, Varma Mutual Pension Insurance Company Mr. MURTO is President and CEO at Varma Mutual Pension Insurance Company. During his career he has also held various positions at the Bank of Finland, the Research Institute of the Finnish Economy and private investment banks. Prior the current position he was CIO of Varma (Investments) during 2006-2014. He holds a doctorate degree in economics from the Helsinki School of Economics. He is Chairman of the Board at University of Oulu and Member of the Board at Sampo Group and Wärtsilä Corporation. |

Mr FREDRIK REINFELDT, Former Prime Minister of Sweden 2006-2014 Mr REINFELDT has been active in Swedish and international politics for over 25 years. As Party leader and Swedish Prime Minister, Mr Reinfeldt reinvented the Moderate Party (centre-right) and formed a four-party alliance that won two successive elections. Having been a member of the European Council for 8 years and its President for six months, he has an extensive international network. In February 2016 Mr Reinfeldt was elected as chair to the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI). The EITI is an international coalition of stakeholders working together to promote open and accountable management of natural resources. In March 2016 Mr Reinfeldt was appointed as Senior Advisor to Bank of America Merrill Lynch.. Mr Reinfeldt hosted a TV interview series in 2016/2017 called ”Toppmötet” (The Summit) with Condoleezza Rice, Tony Blair, Anders Fogh Rasmussen and Jens Stoltenberg. |

Ms MAIJA-RIITTA OLLILA, Philosopher, Writer, Lecturer Ms OLLILA, Doctor of Social Sciences, currently works in her company Pro Sophia Ltd. Her fields of interest are moral philosophy, social philosophy and theory of knowledge. Applications of these are e.g. business ethics, leadership and philosophy of power. Ms Ollila is a lecturer at Aalto University Program of Creative sustainability since 2009 and an Acting Professor (50 %) at Aalto University School of Economics 2008-2010. In 1985 – 2000 Ms Ollila taught philosophy at the University of Helsinki, Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration, Turku School of Economics, Tampere University of Technology. |

Ms SANNA SUVANTO-HARSAAE, Board professional Altia, SAS, Broman Group, Class Ohlson Ms SUVANTO-HARSAAE is chairman of the board and international board professional. She is currently chairman at Altia Oyj, Babysam AS, TCM AS, BoConcept AS, Best VPG Holding AS and vice chair at Paulig OYj. She is also member of the board as SAS AB, Clas Ohlson AB, Upplands Motor AB and Broman Group. She is member of the board at CEPOS (Center for Political studies) in Denmark and lectures on Corporate Governance at Copenhagen Business School. |

Mr JORMA OLLILA, Chairman, Outokumpu Plc, Former Chairman Royal Dutch Shell and Nokia Mr OLLILA, has a master of political science (University of Helsinki), a master of science (Econ.) (London School of Economics), and a master of science (Eng.) (Helsinki University of Technology). Mr Ollila was appointed chairman of Royal Dutch Shell between June 2006 and May 2015. In March 2013 Mr Ollila was appointed chairman of the Board of Directors of Outokumpu Oyj. He is vice-chairman of the board of directors of Otava Books and Magazines Group. He is also a member of the board of directors of Tetra Laval Group and a member of the board of directors of the University of Helsinki. MODERATOR: Mr PHILIP AMINOFF, Chairman of the Board Helectron, Directors Institute Finland Mr AMINOFF, MSc (Econ), MBA (INSEAD), is a Finnish entrepreneur. He represents the fourth owner generation in his family’s businesses, the so-called Cousin Companies. Mr Aminoff is Chairman of Helectron Oy Ab (owner of audio-visual solutions company Electrosonic) and Helvar Merca Oy Ab (owner of lighting intelligence company Helvar and factory automation company Fastems), Deputy Chairman of Veho Oy Ab (automotive trade), and Member of the Board of LocalTapiola General Mutual Insurance Company. He is also Chairman of the Directors’ Institute Finland, Vice Chairman of the German-Finnish Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Ambassadors Circle of Family Business Network International. From 2008 to 2012 Philip was President of European Family Businesses (EFB), the umbrella organization for national family firms’ associations in Europe. |

Mr STEEN THOMSEN, Professor, Copenhagen Business School Mr THOMSEN, professor, Ph.D, is founding chairman of the Center for Corporate Governance, Copenhagen Business School. He specializes in corporate governance as a teacher, researcher, consultant and commentator. His academic publications include 36 international journal articles and several books on corporate governance. His research is currently focused on industrial foundations – foundations that own business firms. Steen has served as a non-executive board member in several business companies and is currently a non-executive chairman of two consulting firms. He a founding board member of the International Corporate Governance Society, the Board Leadership Society in Denmark and academic director of the CBS board programs. He writes columns for the Danish business newspaper Børsen, and has served as a consultant and lecturer to several large companies and government organizations. He has also contributed to best practice codes and law in the area of corporate governance. |

Mr JAN MEYER, Owner, CEO, Meyer Werf Dr MEYER became managing director of Meyer Turku, Finland, in September 2014 and managing director of Meyer Werft Papenburg, Germany, in April 2012. He is a seventh generation ship builder in the Meyer family and has been working with the family business since 2008. Jan Meyer earned his doctorate at Jacobs-University in Bremen. Prior to his dissertation he had already gained work experience at shipyards in Korea and Denmark. Before he had completed his master studies in naval architecture at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge/Boston, USA. |

Mr ANTTI HERLIN, Owner, Chairman of the Board Kone Mr HERLIN, D.Sc. (Econ) h.c., D.Arts h.c., D.Sc. (Tech) h.c. has acted as the Chairman of the Board of KONE Corporation since 2003. He has been a Member of the Board since 1991. In 1996 – 2006, Mr Herlin held the positions of CEO of KONE Corporation and Deputy Chairman in 1996 – 2003. Mr Herlin has several key positions of trust. He is the Chairman of the Board of Security Trading Oy and Holding Manutas Oy and the Vice Chairman of the Board of Sanoma Corporation. |

Mrs TERESA KEMPPI-VASAMA, Owner, Chairman of the Board, Kemppi Mrs. KEMPPI-VASAMA is the executive chairman of the board at Kemppi Oy since March 2014 and a third generation owner in the 68 years old family business. Kemppi Oy is a company dedicated to welding excellence providing its customers globally with arc welding solutions that consist of welding equipment, software and services. Kemppi has always been part of Teresa’s life and she has worked in operational roles in the company responsible for e.g. strategy and business development. Apart from her work at Kemppi and other Kemppi related companies she is also the Chairman of the board at the Association for Finnish Work and a board member at Cargotec Oyj. She has previously also worked for the Finnish Red Cross and Accenture. Kemppi Group Oy was nominated as the Family Company of the year in 2014 and Teresa was nominated as the Veuve Clicquot Business Woman of the Year in 2015 in Finland. |

MODERATOR: Mr RIKU ASIKAINEN, entrepreneur, angel investor and growth hacker Mr ASIKAINEN, is an entrepreneur, angel investor and growth hacker. He started his first company while in high school, and sold it as Finland´s leading internet bookstore fifteen years later. Since then he has been a founder, active investor and board member in more than 35 companies. Mr Asikainen was one of the Co-founders and chairman of FiBAN (Finnish Business Angel network). FiBAN has more than 570 investor members, which do more than 300 investments every year. FiBAN has been awarded by EBAN as Europe´s best business angel network in 2013 and 2015. He is also one of the co-founders of Startup-foundation, behind both phenomenal SLUSH, Europe´s biggest tech conference and Startup sauna, a leading incubator program for the region. |

She has since been recognised with PwC’s ’Most Valuable Entrepreneur’ of the year award as well as Evento Awards ’Best Event Venue in Finland’ award.
